What true wrought iron actually is
Real wrought iron is worked steel, and it carries serious mass. Lean on a panel, back a mower into it, let a kid climb it, and it stays where you put it. That weight is also why iron takes more hands to set, and why the posts underneath have to be planned instead of assumed.

Wrought iron vs aluminum fence on rust and humidity
Aluminum has no iron in it, so it can't rust. The panels arrive powder-coated with the finish baked on, which is why they hold their color through our summers without much help from you.
Iron behaves differently. Our summers run humid for months, and winter ice works into any chip in the paint. Rust starts small, usually at a scratch or a weld, then creeps underneath the finish from there. Keep the paint sound and an iron fence lasts a very long time. Let it go a few years and you're grinding and repainting whole sections.
Maintenance you're signing up for
With aluminum fencing, upkeep is mostly washing it off. Hose the pollen down in spring, knock the mud off the bottom rail, check that the gate hardware is still tight. Scratches show up as bare metal, but they stay that way, because there's nothing in the material to corrode.
An iron fence takes more of your time. Walk the line a couple times a year looking for chips, especially along the bottom of pickets where the string trimmer catches, and around the welds. Touch those spots up before the weather finds them. It's easy work, and it still has to get done.
Repairs, damage, and what happens after a bad day
Iron can be fixed. A vehicle backs into a section, a limb comes down in a storm, and we cut the damage out, straighten it, weld the piece back in, and repaint. Done right, you won't find the repair afterward. That works decades later too, since welding doesn't depend on a manufacturer still stocking the part.
Aluminum doesn't weld well in the field. Damage usually means swapping the bent picket, rail, or panel, which is often quicker and cleaner than a weld if the profile and color still match. On an older fence, matching is the hard part. If you've got a long driveway line where a truck or tractor could clip a panel someday, think that through before you pick a material.
Gates, spans, and pool enclosures
Gates are where the two materials really split. A wide iron gate is heavy, and that load lands on the hinges, the posts, and whatever those posts are set in. Around here that means planning footings around limestone karst and shallow bedrock in some spots, sticky clay in others, and we don't know for certain which we've got until the auger goes in. Aluminum gates weigh far less, so they're easier on hinges, on automatic openers, and on a kid or an older parent trying to swing one.
Around water, aluminum is the pick. Chlorine and splash-out are hard on iron, and a pool deck stays damp long after the rest of the yard has dried, which is why aluminum is the standard for pool fence installation. Pool barriers also carry their own rules on gate latches and self-closing hardware, and those rules vary by jurisdiction. Check with your city or county building department in Spring Hill, Brentwood, or Nolensville before the layout is final, and we'll build to what they tell you.
Decorative work is one place the gap closes. Heavy ornamental detail, custom scrollwork, and wide drive gates push an aluminum job closer to what iron takes, because the labor starts to look alike.
Common questions
Can aluminum fencing really not rust at all?
Correct. Rust is iron oxidizing, and aluminum contains no iron, so it can't rust. Aluminum can corrode in harsh conditions, but that's a different and much slower process, and the powder coat guards against it.
How do I tell if my existing fence is wrought iron or steel?
A magnet sticks to iron and steel and won't stick to aluminum, so that tells you half of it. Separating true wrought iron from tubular steel usually comes down to weight, wall thickness, and how the joints were made. We can look at yours and tell you.
Which one is better for a fence around a pool?
Aluminum, in almost every case. It shrugs off chlorine and the constant moisture around a pool deck, and the lighter gates work better with self-closing and self-latching hardware.
Will an aluminum fence hold up to a big dog?
Usually yes, with the right grade and post spacing. Aluminum comes in different weights, and the residential-grade panel that's fine for a front yard border isn't what we'd use for a strong dog that leans and pushes. Tell us about the dog and we'll spec accordingly.
